8-bit AVR® microcontrollers contain a highly flexible communication peripheral known as a Universal Synchronous and Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter (USART). This peripheral can be used to communicate with a wide variety of other components, including other microcontrollers, wireless modules, LCD displays, GPS modules, etc. The USART peripheral can operate in one of two main modes: Synchronous or Asynchronous. AVR devices include at least one and sometimes more Universal Synchronous and Asynchronous serial Receiver and Transmitter (USART) blocks.
