What Is Silicon Carbide (SiC)?

Wide-bandgap silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors control and switch high-power electrical devices. They offer several advantages over traditional silicon devices, including higher operating temperatures, higher breakdown voltage, faster switching speeds, lower on-resistance, and improved ruggedness. SiC devices are an innovative option to improve system efficiency, shrink a design’s form factor and endure higher operating temperatures in industrial, transportation, automotive, medical, aerospace, aviation, defense and communication products.

From its accidental discovery in the late 19th century by Edward Acheson to its vital role in modern electronics, power systems, and industrial applications, our lighthearted animation delves into the key milestones and advancements in silicon carbide technology.
