MPLAB® X IDE Video Guide to Installation

MPLAB X Integrated Development Environment (IDE) supports three operating systems, Windows®, Linux® and macOS®.  We have created a step-by-step video walkthrough for each operating system to help guide you in the installation process. For system requirements, please see the "Requirements for Installing MPLAB® X IDE" page.

Windows®

Installation Walkthrough

  1. First, download the MPLAB X IDE installation file. The download links are on the right column of the table.
  2. Download MPLAB X IDE for Windows.
  3. Double-click to launch the installer. Click the Next button.   
  4. Read the agreement and click I accept the agreement to proceed.  
  5. The installation location is shown. You can modify the installation location if necessary.  
  6. Review the proxy settings and then click Next.   
  7. All MPLAB X IDE components are selected to install by default. Unless you have limited space on your computer, install all of the components.  
  8. Click Next twice. The application will begin to install. This will take several minutes.  
  9. The completion screen will appear when the installation is complete.   
  10. Once you click Finish, MPLAB X IDE will open and is now ready to use.

Linux®

Installation Walkthrough

  1. First, download the MPLAB X IDE installation file. The download links are in the right column of the table.
  2. Download MPLAB X IDE for Linux.
  3. Navigate to the directory where you downloaded the MPLAB X IDE installer.
  4. Type "tar -xvf".
  5. Type "MPL", and press the Tab key to auto-complete the file name, then press Enter. 
  6. Next, type "sudo ./MPL" and press the Tab key to auto-complete the file name.    
  7. Finally, type "sh" for the file extension and press Enter.
  8. Next, click on the Forward button.  
  9. Read and accept the License Agreement and click Forward.  
  10. Here you can change the default installation location or click Forward. Unless you have limited disk space, leave all options checked for installation.   
  11. Click Forward twice to begin the installation.  
  12. This can take several minutes.
  13. Once the installation is complete, you can launch MPLAB X IDE from the dialog. Click Finish, and MPLAB X IDE will open.  
  14. You should restart your computer to enable the MPLAB X IDE USB drivers to work properly with the programmers and debuggers.

Mac®

Installation Walkthrough

  1. First, download the MPLAB X IDE installation file. The download links are on the right column of the table.
  2. Download MPLAB X IDE for Mac.
  3. Double-click to launch the installer. Click the Next button.   
  4. Read and accept the License Agreement to proceed.  
  5. The installation location is shown. You can modify this if necessary.  
  6. Review the proxy settings and then click Next.   
  7. All MPLAB X IDE components are selected to install by default. Unless you have limited space on your computer, install all the components.  
  8. Click Next twice.  
  9. The application will begin to install. This will take several minutes.  
  10. The completion screen will appear once the installation is complete. 
  11. If you click on Finish, MPLAB X IDE opens and is now ready to use.
